English Language Arts
The Tennessee state standards in English language arts (ELA) outline the reading, writing, language, speaking, listening, and research skills students will need to succeed in college and the workforce. With a renewed emphasis on the close reading of complex texts, especially literary nonfiction, our ELA standards require all students to graduate ready to read and respond to the academic and technical texts they will encounter throughout their adult lives.

Response to Instruction and Intervention Framework
This three-tiered framework helps educators differentiate instruction as students need extra help. Tennessee schools are moving to this framework over the next several years.
Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject and in each grade. The Tennessee state standards define what students need to learn at each grade level. They provide a chance to improve access to quality content standards for students with disabilities and English Learners.
